Hikikomori, a sonic entity forged in the crucible of London's north and south fringes, stands as a testament to the power of chaotic synergy. This avant-garde duo, comprised of Tom Wilson wielding synths and pedals and Dean Valentine Smith commanding the drums, isn't merely playing music; they are conducting sonic experiments that delve into intense and exhilarating new realms. Their sound is a powerful fusion, a volatile cocktail of free noise and jagged jazz rhythms that reflects the frenetic energy of urban life and the introspective isolation embodied by the "hikikomori" phenomenon itself.
Tom Wilson, known for his work with the UK's potent noise project NIGHT PORTER, brings his expertise in crafting frenzied textures to the forefront. These swirling soundscapes, however, are not allowed to simply unravel. They are masterfully contained and directed by Dean Valentine Smith, whose experience with the alternative-industrial unit THIS BE THE VERSE lends him a keen eye for structure within the abstract. Smith’s angular drum skills act as the grounding force, guiding the turbulent soundscapes into uncharted territories.
