A Bigger Mouth
Band Stand
Following the release of their debut album Freedom Pass in 2024, the sextet of free jazz improvisers that make A Bigger Mouth release their new album Band Stand. Lead track ‘Structural Nonsense’, is a percussive and playful exploration of tension and release.
The first Mouth was a duo of Lol Coxhill on soprano saxophone and Mike Walter on tenor saxophone. They performed and recorded together for twelve years and often grew into a quartet with the addition of acoustic bass and drums. Mike also gathered a trio under the same moniker for occasional performances.
For some time Mike pondered A Bigger Mouth and eventually began the process of forming a sextet. The aim was to bring together musicians and their instruments from diverse musical backgrounds and enable them to play freely together. The band draws from jazz, middle eastern, pop, rock, improvisation, classical and Latin music. It seeks to become A Bigger Mouth.
A monthly gig was organised at the Hundred Years Gallery in East London and the band developed its approach and sound spontaneously in front of a live audience. It played and freely became A Bigger Mouth and went on to record Band Stand. The recording of Band Stand took place over four days at Master Chord Studios London and was produced and engineered by Ian Dean.
The record features a few names like Lu Edmonds and Mark Roberts who are in PiL and Alan Wakeman from Soft Machine.
