He is seen as a buzzard with vampire teeth, dining out on the rich culture and history of Breadminster whilst giving little back. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis has translated into hostile reviews of his work in local publications, most notably a scathing takedown in the agricultural and sing-song magazine Grass \u0026amp; Gramophone, which described his latest work as \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e\"the deafening sounds of laurels rested\"\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eParadoxically, this visceral expulsion from Breadminster's intelligentsia prompted the flailing Minnelli to unearth an odd facet of the town's recent past. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eExclusion has a rich history in Breadminster. Shunning and banishment have, in many ways, made the area what it is: a hotbed of populist infighting, besmirchment and hate. Minnelli’s research brought him to the curious case of the Cincinnati Exclave, a small area in rural Ohio, where a settlement of former townsfolk found new hope and glory in 2016. The overwhelming reason for said exile pertains to their unwavering use of animals in every facet of the justice system.* \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThough their apparent transgressions differ greatly, Minnelli found common ground with these misunderstood folk, and their fight (and funding) became a key impetus for \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSpitting Feathers\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eConceptually and musically, \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSpitting Feathers\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e sees Minnelli continue his exploration of dub in its various forms, anchored to the mournful notion of exile, whether that be for seeking to preserve one's own legal traditions, or as a broader comment on the human condition. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e‘Contested Estuary’ is a version of an Appalachian courting ballad known often as ‘Vandy’, which tells of a lady awaiting the return of her lover, who is at war, while she turns down the advances of another man. The stark loyalty, yearning and tragedy of the song's themes are amplified by the production's stark use of drone and driving weariness, with Minnelli’s vocal front and centre. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e‘Slap on the Wrist’ takes influence from formative evenings attending Aba Shanti’s University of Dub. An elongated dub improvisation that takes inspiration from the ‘third cut’, which follows the clean vocal and initial dub that are played on the soundsystem, indulging the more off-kilter whims of the producer. Sonically, the lonesome horns bring to mind the paranoid majesty of Kode9’s 9 ‘Samurai’. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eElsewhere, ‘Quango’’s impetus comes from the slightly skewed, minimal use of the MT40 Casio that birthed ‘Sleng Teng’ and a whole era of digital dub, dancehall and reggae, and ‘Clerical Benefit’ brings Minnelli’s cautious vocals and clattering instrumentation into the world of the early dubstep of Bristol and Big Apple. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003e*Please find further reading on the Cincinnati Exclave below. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cb\u003e\u003c\/b\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eFurther Reading on the Cincinnati Exclave and Its Continued Upholding of Traditional Breadminster Values \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eA small, but vocal group of citizens were expelled from Breadminster during the heady summer of 2016, due mainly to their continued involvement of animals in the legal system. This involved cases such as: owls being tried for perjury, horses being sued for slander, and geese being convicted of cybercrime (depicted on the \u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003eSpitting Feathers\u003c\/span\u003e\u003cspan\u003e cover art). \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eMany of the exiled have found new beginnings as part of the Cincinnati Exclave, fashioned in the timeless style of the fun-loving German Argentines, or the Leave-voting, Magaluf-leaning ex-Beckenham community. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eMore than a decade on from their expulsion, the Exclave has built a happy, if somewhat more severe, way of life. One quirk of their legal system is that animals are also permitted to serve on juries and, on rare occasions, even for the prosecution. \u003c\/span\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp dir=\"ltr\"\u003e\u003cspan\u003eThis led to the controversial case of Lucas Bérmont, who was sentenced to death by a jury whose deciding vote was cast by a Great Dane. It was later discovered that the dog had received gifts of pork from the prosecution, which may have compromised its neutrality.
